The Dolly Dreams of Kaye Romero

Hello everyone! こんばんは!

For today’s post, I just want to share my inspiring interview with Kaye, a kawaii designer & super crafty girl hailing from the Philippines. She is also ChiChi / Little Miss Paintbrush‘s not-so-little little sister, hehe! : )

I work with Kaye almost every day. She is the girl behind all the updates of our projects’ social media accounts. She inspires me so much that I’ve decided to feature her on my blog. I think I’ll be featuring more of my friends here, hehe! She is my co-sensei at our Kawaii D.I.Y. blog.

Dolly Kaye

When I first worked with Kaye, it was during Kawaii in Manila 1 workshop. For our workshop participants, she almost sewed 30+ kawaii girl plushies & so much more. This girl is overflowing with talent, and I knew that with just a little push & more encouragement, she will be able to go farther. And I’m so happy to witness how she has grown so much! I was so amazed that I decided to give her my first electric sewing machine (since her machine broke) that I wasn’t using anymore. I knew that she would put it in good use… and of course, she did! All of her works have been magical! : )

When we planned Kawaii in Manila 2, I appointed her as the “Fashion Show Director” even if she didn’t have any experience .. and boy, she did a great job coordinating with everyone! I love working with zealous people who have the same drive! Indeed, believing goes a long, long way.

I cannot wait for me and my Kawaii PH team friends to travel around Japan someday and wear pretty clothes by Kaye. ^^

Anyway, here it is! I hope that this kawaii feature will also inspire you!

What was your childhood dream? What are your big dreams now?

When I was young, I wanted to be a nurse. When I grew up, I realized that it’s not my calling to be one anymore. Haha. I got scared that my clumsiness might kill someone instead, lol. But now, my dream is to be a successful designer and owner of my store. I want to be known internationally, hehe! I also want to spread the Kawaii fashion here in our country in a way that they will be enlightened that it’s not only “kpop” style. I also have dreams to go to Japan and Korea. I would love to visit these two countries from time to time and watch a Hanabi festival someday (with or without a special someone lol). I also want to attend a concert which I’ve never done before in my entire existence. I still have a lot of dreams and sometimes, life becomes unfavorable and tough. One should really work hard to achieve these dreams.. which I will do!

How did Kawaii change your life? How did Kawaii PH influence you?

Joining Kawaii PH opened a new dream for me. As I’ve mentioned before, I really wanted to become a nurse. After realizing that I could not be one, I was left as a girl who didn’t know what to do in her life. I worked different kinds of jobs while searching for that special dream of mine. The Kawaii Philippines team encouraged me to make a clothing store and open this creative side of mine.. which I wasn’t really aware of before. And from then on, I’ve finally found out what I really wanted to do. My dream is to be successful as a Kawaii designer who makes dresses for everyone! Thank you Kawaii PH!

For me, the “kawaii culture” / Kawaii Philippines has influenced my life in a very positive way. It made my life more colorful and and happier. Through kawaii, I was able to discover a new & improved version of myself. I realized a lot about my passions and I met new kawaii friends. I gained more confidence because of this family.

What do you do?

I update all social media accounts for both and Kawaii.PH . I make sure that every account is updated. I also blog for Kawaii DIY website as a sensei and I am one of the Kawaii PH Bloggers. I am also the appointed Kawaii PH store manager and I answer every inquiry / orders for our humble Kawaii store.

Why do you love Japan? Why do you want to go to Japan?

There are a lot of reasons why I want to go to Japan. Well, who wouldn’t be?

I really want to experience the Japanese culture that I’ve been admiring about since I was young. I want to wear a yukata in an actual hanabi festival, play the games, go to Harajuku, and experience cherry blossoms. I want to shop and buy kawaii fabrics until I have no more money left to spend, lol. And of course, I would love to see the Tokyo Tower!

What were your frustrations before?

Sometimes, I find it disappointing whenever people would label “kawaii style” as “kpop” when this kind of fashion is actually far from this “term”. That is why I would like to spread the kawaii culture more so that these kinds of people would become more open-minded about others’ cultures. I also cannot stand the judging eyes of others. Some would call you weird, and “baduy”.  Some people would even think that you’re a cosplayer when you’re not really cosplaying (and your fashion is definitely not a costume). And I don’t really like it when people underestimate your capabilities just because you are working home-based or you are establishing your own businesses. I’ve encountered some people who would tell me that these efforts will not do anything for my future, which I find really harsh. But of course, I should not let these get in my way. I just need to work hard enough and prove that someday, my dreams WILL come true and they will not underestimate me anymore.

What do you think about dressing up to express yourself? Please give tips for others who are also interested in kawaii fashion. ^^

I dress the way that I want. I guess that my style can be classified under “Aomoji-kei” too. I also wear something that defines or suits my mood. One of my must-haves is a pair of socks. I always wear socks when I go outside.

My kawaii tip is that you must not be scared to dress differently. For me, it is better to be different in a normal crowd. At least, you are standing out! Also, dress up comfortably if you must.

Many say that your style introduce swho you are. Do not be afraid of what people might say. Be merry and be kawaii!

What is your message for fellow kawaii dreamer-achievers?

When reaching those dreams of yours, just work hard.

Do not get too affected on what people would think and tell about you.

Slowly, one by one, you will reach those dreams.

Just believe in yourself and do not be scared to do something different.

Embrace the kawaii-ness inside of you, haha!
